Food Forward tops 60,000 lbs!

November 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment

What an amazing Food Forward pick we had last Sunday in Granada Hills. It was a perfect day in a beautiful, two row, 16 tree orange orchard. And together, we harvested 1,789 lbs of oranges!

This brings Food Forward’s YTD total to 60,649 pounds of fresh fruit
gleaned and donated to our local food pantries to feed families in need!

A huge thanks to all 20 volunteers who came, helped and celebrated Food Forward pushing over 60,000 lbs this year…

CAN IT! – Our Pilot Preserve Project Launches Nov. 22

November 3, 2009 · Leave a Comment

In an attempt to take Food Forward’s activities of helping fight hunger in Southern CA to the next level, we are partnering with master canners Nina and Kevin of putsup.com for a pilot workshop on canning and preserving.  This is aimed specifically to help educate/inspire FF volunteers who would want to be part of a new program where we can some of the bounty we harvest, donating part of it to the hungry as preserves, and selling part of it to help raise money for our group.

If you have a strong interest in learning about canning AND would want to use that interest to help move this initiative forward we have a HANDFUL of spots available for a Sunday Nov 22nd workshop at the MEND Kitchen in Pacoima.  It will start at 1:30pm and Nina will be running what is assured to be a great afternoon of learning and hands on canning.

RSVP to info@foodforward.org.

Again, we have VERY FEW spots and are holding them for FF folk who to help take this knowledge into piloting a new initiative with us.  Thanks!

A Harvesting Weekend to Remember

October 18, 2009 · 1 Comment

FF volunteers harvested over 2000 lbs of free fresh fruits and veggies for LA’s hungry this weekend..an amazing feat in itself, but when you factor in the over dozen new volunteers, new varietals of fruits and veggies we gleaned, new pick locations, and interview we had on Good Food (temp link – we’ll have interview on press page soon: http://www.kcrw.com/etc/programs/gf/gf091017the_green_fairy_port) – it was a pretty incredible weekend all around.  Big thanks go out to our pick leaders Erica and Marie – and to Luke of MEND for helping further our partnership with Jeff at Pierce College.  We hear due to good weather and abundant crops, FF may be back there soon :)

We have some great projects, picks and events in the hopper an hope to making some cool announcements soon.  We wanted to thank the volunteers that headed out to our tour of MEND over a week ago – we know some of you got messed up from the traffic, and are sorry for that, but we hope to do another volunteer meet n greet before the year is out.  In the meantime, thanks for all the ongoing support, new faces and offers of help…Look forward to seeing you at a pick soon.

Food Forward is a proud supporter of the Garden School Foundation here in Los Angeles and wanted to let you know about an upcoming workday at the 24th Street School.

Dear GSF Supporters:

Just a reminder to come and visit the 24th Street School at our upcoming workday, next Saturday, 10/24, 9-12 at the 24th Street School.  We are fortunate to have our partners from RootDown LA, Megan Hansen and Katy Atkiss, providing us all a delicious meal!

The school address:  2055 West 24th Street (between Western and Arlington Avenues). For any additional information, please contact me (contact info. below).

GSF has also been featured in the most recent issue of Edible LA magazine!  We are very grateful to Lucy Lean (editor of Edible and GSF board member) for all her support!  If possible, please take a moment to subscribe to the magazine and read about the sustainable food movement in our city that we’re all a part of!  To subscribe go to this link:

www.ediblelosangeles.com/Site/subscribe

GSF’s chairperson, Nancy Power, has just released her new book, “The Power of Gardens” and will be at a book signing this upcoming Saturday, 10/17 (2-3:30 PM), at the Hennesey and Ingalls bookstore located in Santa Monica:  214 Wilshire Blvd. (adjacent to 3rd Street Promenade).  Please come support Nancy and GSF!

Finally, our friends at the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC) have asked all community and school garden supporters to attend a series of upcoming meetings held by the Southern Regional Volunteer Neighborhood Oversight Committees (RVNOC).  WLCAC hopes to overturn a decision made by the city of LA failing to provide Proposition K funding for the MudTown Farm in Watts.  The meetings will be held every Wednesday, October 21, 28, and Nov. 4th from 3-5PM at
